This is a guide book and companion to Troia which narrates its ancient history following today's sightseeing route. Its major chapters are Discovery of Troia, Heinrich Schliemann and the Treasure, Trojan War, famous visitors to Troia and the important objects displayed at the Çanakkale Archaeological Museum. The story of the discovery of Troia is one of the most exciting adventures in the history of archaeology. The life of the man who discovered Troia, the treasure he found, the rumours which followed its loss, its rediscovery in the vaults of Puskin Museum in Moscow have given Troia a special place among the sites of antiquity in Anatolia. However, unless one is well acquainted with the history of the site or has a rich imagination, the impression given by the present condition of the ruins may be one of disappointment. Little is left from the ancient glories of King Priam, and the high towers and walls, palaces and temples of Homer have perished. When one realizes that nine separate cities of altogether forty settlement layers were founded on the same spot, as well as the fact that the very early excavations were not carried out in a scientific way, the difficulty of understanding and interpreting the surviving ruins of Troia will become obvious.
