The German Design Awards recognise innovative projects and products that represent pioneering contributions to the German and international design landscape. They identify and present unique design trends: a competition that advances the design-oriented economy. This promise is guaranteed by its highly esteemed, international jury of 37 experts. This jury not only selects winners in the areas of product, communication and architecture (with its own major award category for the first time this year), but also the finalist of the award for up-and-coming designers. In addition, a personality award is awarded to one designer every year to honour their lifetime achievement.

This year, the jury's award for personality of the year goes to the English designer Jasper Morrison. For Morrison, meaningful, natural use and function come before form, which should be elegant but not so striking as to immediately give away the identity of the designer. Accordingly, Morrison likes to present his designs alongside nameless. standard everyday items found everywhere by the millions and used by people every day, without know-ing the designer. It is a fascinating approach, described by Morrison as >>super normal<. As mentioned above, this year's German Design Awards for the first time include the world of architec-ture in its own major award category, alongside the two existing categories »Excellent Product Designe and Excellent Communications Design«. The >>Excellent Architecture<< awards include both projects of classical architecture and projects of interior design in a number of different subcategories. This new...
