One of the chief endeavours of this book is to make some results of the Hungarian historiography dealing with the 16th Hungarian Turkologists generally reach the wider public, due to the international character of their field of studies, the accumulated knowledge of “ordinary” historians studying mostly “national” subjects could not become common property since their works had rarely been translated into foreign languages. Nevertheless, national histoghraphy can clarify important details and add considerably to the better understanding of the political and military events of the Süleymanic era. We hope that the papers included in this volume will shed for Ottoman studies - even though certain views and approaches may occasionally provoke the Ottomanist.

The puplication of the present volume was made possible by the financial assitance of the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Hungarian Republic. The editors express their gratitude to Imre Kubovics, deputy undersecretary of state for his generous support of the project. (From Preface)
