In these two novellas, Gide shows the tragic effect of love's rebellion against the confines of common morality.

La Symphonie Pastorale is the tale of a country priest who takes into his home a blind orphan with the charitable purpose of educating her. As her awareness grows, so do his feelings for her; when an operation eventually restores her sight, his face conveys to her the feelings he dare not declare, and the pastoral idyll ends in tragedy.

In Isabelle, Gide explores the nature of a different kind of love - a passion based on pure fantasy. When a callow young scholar goes to stay in a country house, the glimpse of a portrait and the mystery surrounding its sitter plunge him into an idealized love affair which is sadly resolved when he finally meets the figure around whom his dreams are woven.

Gide's simple and lucid prose elevates these short pieces to the status of his longer and more widely known works.

The cover shows a detail from 'Monastery in the Snow' by K. F. Lessing, in the Wallraf Richartz Museum, Cologne (Snark International)
