The discovery of some three hundred pavements in Antioch and its environs during the excavations of 1932-1939 was a landmark event in the studies of floor mosaics which enriched our knowledge of the pictorial arts of the Roman east. The significance of the Antioch mosaics is due to their outstanding technical achievements, the brilliance of their decorative and naturalistic effects, and their grand scale. Their sheer quantity and localization offers an opportunity to study the iconographic and stylistic changes over 400 years of Roman art history. The Antioch mosaics date from the first decades of the second century until those produced just before the earthquake of 526.

This book brings together a very large part of the mosaic pavements which were brought to light in and around Antioch in the 1930s and which at present are being displayed at Hatay Archaeological Museum in Antakya, the Louvre and over twenty institutions in the USA.

In many cases, a restoration of the original layout is included, drawing together for the first time in print, all the pieces which had been scattered following excavation. A great number of the pavements the book covers have specifically been photographed for this volume. The quality of the pictures is first-rate making this the definitive work on Antioch Mosaics.
