PREFACE
THIS book is intended to furnish the necessary material in grammar, oral and written drill, and reading matter for a beginners' course in German in Junior and Senior high schools. There are sixty lessons, but it is not intended that each lesson be covered in one recitation. In most high schools the ele-mentary course in German lasts from one and one half to two years. The lessons in this book are to cover about three terms in the Senior high school, and a correspondingly longer period of time in the Junior high school.
Each lesson consists of a "story," i.e. a set of connected sentences, or an anecdote. The very first lessons can be easily interpreted or acted out by the teacher, which will add toward visualizing the new expressions. Every story is followed by a vocabulary, a set of questions based on the story, grammatical explanations, and exercises. The story furnishes the material from which the grammatical principles are to be deduced. The exercises are to offer the necessary drill material on these principles.

The first fifteen sections of the book, preceding the lessons proper, are devoted to the German sounds. It is understood, of course, that no book can take the place of the living word. The suggestions given, however, may prove helpful to the teacher, especially to the beginner, by giving practical hints and calling attention to special difficulties. Pupils should be made to learn the sounds of the German alphabet and should never be allowed to spell a German word by means of English sounds....
