The Egyptian Museum, also known as the Cairo Museum to distinguish it from the collections of other cities, was established by the Egyptian govern-ment in 1835. Originally housed in the palace of Ismail Pasha, the current museum was designed by French architect Marcel Dourgnon and opened in 1900. The museum collections exceed 120,000 objects ranging from the pre-historic era through to the Greco-Roman period. Some of the most impor-tant exhibits in the Egyptian Museum are taken from the royal tombs of Tuthmosis III, Tuthmosis IV, Amenhotep III, Horemheb and the tomb of Yuya and Tuya. Also over 1,700 Artifacts from the tomb of Tutankhamun are on display. Altogether these priceless items placed in context with each other make a visit to the Egyptian museum a truly unique experience.
