“The Whistling Memory”, the exhibition which brought Yapı Kredi Museum's substantial numismatic and ethnographic collections and contemporary art to converge, is now presented to the attention of readers as a publication bearing the same title. This volume offers an extensive look into the practices of artists Akram Zaatari, Hilal Can, and Michael Rakowitz, who took part in the exhibition with works that explored the museum's collections. It includes a detailed account of the specifics of the exhibition – which aims to put forward a fresh perspective on the notions of found objects, memory, and the latter's visibility – and of the roots of the artists' practices. The essays authored by Edhem Eldem, Vid Simoniti, and Seçil Epik specifically for this publication are accompanied by a text in which Osman Hamdi Bey and Théodore Reinach recount the story of the 1892 Sidon excavations.
