Chapter I. the ideological bases of soviet foreign policy Chapter II. the formetive years, 1917- 1921 Chapter III. accommodation and consolidation, 1921-1934 Chapter IV. the search for security, 1934-1941 Chapter V. the wartime alliance Chapter VI. sovie policy and the roots cold war Chapter VII. stalinization and empire, 1948-1953 Chapter VIII. the krushchev era: the ussr as a superpover Chapter IX the brezhnev period: Competitive coexistence and imperial consolidation If you are a student of diplomatic history this is a must have for any collection. Rubinstein is an expert in international diplomacy of this region and he delivers a masterpiece with his work on the foreign policy of Russia. This goes back to the times of the huns and works its way through mostly the soviet era concluding with a little bit on the Russian Federation. The challenges of China and the efforts to control the Behring Strait are all see here. The book is well written and would make an excellent textbook in any Russian history class especially one focusing on the soviet era (really only the first three chapters are the non soviet sections). If you are doing any work on Soviet Diplomacy this is a great introduction and a wonderful book to have for research.
