The album published by Kapon Editions, on the occasion of the centenary of the liberation of Thessaloniki, documents with unexpected material and from a fresh viewpoint the city's universe, conveying the nuances of its Byzantine heritage and enhancing aspects of the contemporary western megalopolis. The text and the 150 images bring memory to life and highlight the momentous changes Thessaloniki has undergone in the course of the last one hundred years.
The contributors to the book do not confine themselves to enumerating chronologically the most important events in the city's history. On the contrary, they attempt a synthesis of Thessaloniki's many facets, its public image and its urban culture, in the framework of the last century, without strictly following the perspective of one specific discipline – historical, sociological, architectural or other. Concurrently, they explore the social human geography of Thessaloniki, conveying a sense of the culture of the everyday.
