A monographic book about the work of Murat Germen, a faculty member at Sabancı University's Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and one of the most important representatives of contemporary photography art in Turkey. The body of the book, which examines the artist's series from the 2000s to the present under the title “New Turkey” in eight sections, consists of “original interpretations” that Germen captured in his works produced through various experiments.
The publication features detailed writings by Murathan Mungan and Necmi Sönmez, as well as a conversation between the artist and Barbara Hoffmann Johnson, who works as a curator at Photographische Sammlung Köln, and notes written by Germen.
The book opens up for discussion topics that have been at the center of Turkey's agenda in the last decade, such as urban transformation that has now become “harmful,” industrial growth caused by economic developments, social engineering, relationships between art and capital, road constructions that provide no benefit to public transportation and contribute to congested traffic, and finally the Gezi Resistance, which is the most important social movement in Turkey's history.
The 252-page book, measuring 24 × 31 cm, is presented in a single volume in both Turkish and English within an acetate box.
