Reading the History of Furniture and Interior Architecture in Turkey Through Oral History Method

Following the DATUMM ‘Documentation and Archiving - Modern Furniture in Turkey' project (datumm.org), which focuses on researching, documenting and archiving modern furniture in Turkey and was granted trademark registration in 2015, the DATUMM Research group, which focuses on the professional life of interior architects-designers who have made significant contributions to both fields with their comprehensive productions in the years when furniture and interior architecture education was established with the project ‘Reading the History of Furniture and Interior Architecture in Turkey through Oral History Method', is starting a new project.

Although the profession of interior architecture has been [contentiously] associated with female designers on both national and international scales throughout history, women designers have not received the recognition they deserve in interior architecture and design history books. In this regard, the literature on the modern period is particularly full of gaps.

This series examines the contributions of women designers to the interior architecture profession, their position in the 20th century design processes in Turkey and their design approaches, their life stories, personalities, work lives and projects, and questions the context of being a woman interior designer in Turkey in the 20th century. It is believed that the series will help assimilate the historical background of the interior architecture profession in Turkey and raise awareness of being a woman in this profession.

This book, which is part of a series created to shed light on the professional lives of women interior architects/designers who have come to the forefront in the fields of furniture and interior architecture in Turkey, reflected their own style and shaped these two fields, focuses on the life story and contributions to the history of design of Interior Architect Bediz Koz, who is noted for her modern design aesthetic and the cultural vision she brought to the practice of interior architecture in Turkey. Through oral history, the book illuminates a chapter of her rich life - defined by elegance - that remains untold in standard textbooks.
