This is not "how to do research" type of research methods textbook. Rather, the aim of this book is to help students learn how to read and understand the typical empirical research articles that make up the literatures of the social/behavioral sciences. This volume is devoted to the design of research, and concentrates on the fundamental conceptual issues involved in research design. Following the introduction of the basic concepts of science and scientific research, three research articles which are analyzed in detail to clarify the conceptual structure of the empirical research process are presented. The first case is a sociological study using sample survey methodology, the second is a political science study using content analysis methodology and the third a psychological study involving laboratory experimentation. The rest of the book introduces and discusses the fundamental elements of experimental design, sampling, and measurement, amplifying and elaborating on the issues that are highlighted by the case studies.
