Sultan Qansuh (correct: Qanisauh) al-Ghuri, the last ruler of the Mamluk of Egypt (ruled 1501-1516) lived in a most exciting time. In 1492, America was discovered, and the Muslim rule in al-Andalus ended owing to the re-conquista; shortly afterwards the Reformation in Germany ushered in the 'modern' development of Europe. In the Muslim world, Shah Ismail the Safawid conquered Iran in 1501 to introduce the Shia as state sect; the Ottomans extended their realms every year; the Timurid rule in Herat broke down after Hussain Baiqara's death in 1506, and two decades later, Babur again a descendant of Tamerlan, founded the splendid Mogul Empire of India.
