While learning and teaching Turkish history I have always asked myself these questions: What are our chief individual and national achievements in the history of civilization? Are we able to make known to the world the originators of these achievements in an adequate way? There is no doubt that our political and military figures have had a fairer deal in this respect. But it has often not been taken into consideration that when the Ottoman armies had gone as far as the walls of Vienna, the Ottoman powers possesses the most advanced equipment of the age and they were organized in a most advanced way. After all, works depending on learning and tecnology have always been the significant foundations in the lives of nations. (Önsöz'den)
